Cholesterol significantly affects the property of phospholipid membrane such as fluidity and membrane protein function. It exhibits a condensing effect towards phospholipids. Cholesterol-phospholipid interaction influences physiological properties of a lipid bilayer. Cholesterol serves as a precursor of bile acids, steroid hormones and vitamin D.
