Analysis Note

The biological activity is measured in a cell proliferation assay using T11, a subline of the IL-6-dependent murine plasmacytoma cell line T1165.85.2.1 that has been adapted to grow in IL-11.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Interleukin-11, also called adipogenesis inhibitory factor (AGIF), is a pleotropic cytokine that acts on hematopoietic progenitor cells and stromal cells. Although recombinant human IL-11 has a predicted molecular mass of 19 kDa, it migrates as a 23 kDa band in SDS-PAGE. It is a functional homolog of IL-6, inducing the proliferation of certain plasmacytoma cell lines and acute phase protein secretion in the liver. IL-11 stimulates the production of erythrocytes, megakaryocytes, and T cell development of antibody producing B cells.

Interleukin 11 (IL-11) is involved in promoting tissue fibrosis and regulates the function of chondrocytes, synoviocytes, and B cells. It is also involved in bone metabolism and tissue remodeling.

General description

Interleukin-11 (IL-11) is synthesized by many mesenchymal origin cells like keratinocytes, synoviocytes, fibroblasts, bone marrow stromal cells, osteoblasts, and chondrocytes.

The gene IL-11 (interleukin 11) is mapped to human chromosome 19q13.4. It is a secreted protein.
