Biochem/physiol Actions
Galectin-8 (Gal-8) is a member of “tandem-repeat” galectin family, possesses two carbohydrate binding domains linked by a short peptide. The short peptide accounts for Gal-8 cell adhesion and downstream signalling. Tumor cells, as well as normal tissues, express Gal-8. The expression level of Gal-8 is higher in multiple myeloma conditions and enhances adhesion to vascular endothelium. Galectin-8 binds to integrin selectively and inhibits cell adhesion and promotes apoptosis. Gal-8 interacts with integrin alpha and regulates neutrophil adhesion to endothelial cells and migration. Gal-8 ligand binds to cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44) and causes an inflammatory response in rheumatoid arthritis. Overexpression of Gal-8 plays a key role in metastasis of prostate cancer and cell survival by causing rearrangement of the cytoskeleton and E-cadherin expression.
