Biochem/physiol Actions
The protein fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) mainly controls phosphate homeostasis and induces its excretion. Fgf23 maintains normal serum phosphate and calcium levels, by suppressing the action of sodium phosphate co-transporters and 25-hydroxyvitamin D 1-?-hydroxylase. Deficiency of the encoded protein causes chronic kidney disease. Leptin, a protein highly expressed in obesity is known influence the expression of this protein. Thus, higher FGF23 gene expression is observed in obese individuals. The FGF23 gene affects cardiac properties and is associated with cardiovascular risk factors such as alcoholism.
General description
This ELISA antibody pair detects Human FGF-23
The FGF23 (fibroblast growth factor 23) gene is mapped to human chromosome 12p13.32 and encodes a phosphaturic hormone secreted by osteocytes. FGF23 is a 30 kDa protein and is part of the FGF19 subfamily.
